The Epic of Mem and Zin
Description
The Epic of Mem and Zin by the Kurdish poet Ehmedê Xanî is regarded as a Kurdish national epic. It is based on a legend that was orally handed down from generation to generation. The youth Mem appeared in the dream of a beautiful girl. The young girl Zin also dreamt of a young man. When they met in reality, they knew that they were meant for each other. Unfortunate circumstances and an evil intriguer prevented them from getting married. To us Kurds, Mem embodies the Kurdish people, and Zin, the Kurdish land, which are separated from each other. They cannot come together, but their love cannot be destroyed.
