Persian New Year

Description

The Persian New Year Nowruz always occurs at the beginning of spring on 20th and 21st March. Seven symbols pertain to Nowruz, all of which begin with the Persian alphabet “S”: sekke (coin), sib (apple), somach (the Persian spice sumac), sombol (hyacinth), sir (garlic), sabseh (wheat or a similar grain), and serke (vinegar). The New Year´s drink made out of seven fruits is called Haft Mewa. The table is decorated for the Persian New Year´s feast with samanak (sprouts from seven kinds of grain), a mirror, a candle, and a holy or important book.
